- 1 pound breakfast sausage, crumbled
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried mustard
- 6 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the crumbled sausage until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried mustard.
- In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the bread cubes, then half of the cooked sausage, and half of the cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread, sausage, and cheese. Press down gently to ensure all bread is soaked.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
- The next morning, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
- Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until the casserole is set and golden brown on top.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- You can customize this casserole by adding vegetables such as bell peppers or spinach.
- This casserole can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
