Description
This hearty overnight casserole is perfect for breakfast or brunch. It combines savory sausage, fluffy eggs, and cheese for a delicious start to your day.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound breakfast sausage, casings removed
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 4 cups cubed bread (preferably stale)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the bread cubes, followed by half of the cooked sausage, and half of the cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the top of the casserole, ensuring all the bread is soaked.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
- The next morning, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
- Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the casserole is set and golden on top. If it browns too quickly, cover with foil.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired. Serve warm.
